The development of a new International Cruise Terminal in Marine South, Singapore is to be considered very clever as this will increase the growth of tourist arrivals to the destination. The Cruise Terminal will be ready in 2010 and already by 2015, 1.6 million cruise passengers are expected to visit the destination.
Such a growth in cruise passengers arrivals will have a major impact on the destination and the different stakeholders. At the moment, Singapore is still not able to handle such large amounts of tourists as there were not that many cruise passengers in the past.
Before taking any measures regarding the future growth of cruise passengers in Marine South, Singapore it is important to focus on cruise tourism behaviour. In general, they all have some similarities regarding their consumer behaviour. These type of tourists normally stay for a short time in a certain destination before travelling to the next country this is mainly because of lack of time. As a result cruise passengers will not travel that far so interesting tourist attractions should not nearby, furthermore it is important that these cruise passengers experience the tourism product and facilities the destination has to offer easily and most important the cruise passengers have to get inspired by the destination in a short time.
The destination has to upgrade its infrastructure so that interesting places are simple to reach, in the case of Singapore it is to mention that the destination already started with the upgrading of the infrastructure by developing a network of roads and a future link to the underground rail transport systems, as a result of this there are easy facilities to other parts of Asia.
So if there are more cruise passenger arrivals, different stakeholders have to be involved to accomplish the above mentioned issues. It is very important for the International Cruise Terminal to work together with the different stakeholders, like hotels, transportation companies, to optimize and establish a good consumer experience and get the most out of it. Marine South is already working with Singapore city skyline to discuss about dining and live entertainment attractions, development of theme parks.
Another result of the growth in cruise passenger arrivals is that the destination will be more attractive due to the different international maritime routes and air connectivity worldwide. This is of course very positive for the destinations economical and competing situation as more cruise liners are willing to establish themselves in Singapore which results in cruise passenger arrivals from more different destinations and so the country becomes more accessible and more interesting to tourists.
To conclude is that when there is an increase in tourist arrivals, whether it are cruise passengers or leisure tourists, this will always affect the destinations’ situation and the best way to react to it is by working together with the different stakeholders by making use of a proper planning and looking at it from different perspectives.
